Luke Sands is a bass player, engineer, and producer based in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. Born and raised in the west side of Los Angeles, California, Luke caught his first Grateful Dead show at the tender age of 15. The bus came by, he got on, and that’s where it all began. At 18, he travelled North to Santa Barbara, where he expanded his mind in college classes, surfing and rocking the bass guitar in a popular USCB college party band Happy Trails. This band of lightly-educated hippies covered crowd-pleasing music from the like of Bob Dylan, Van Morrison and lots and lots of Grateful Dead. When Happy Trails began to write and perform original music, Luke and the band began the traveling touring bohemian music life. He and girlfriend and musical partner Ginger Bean moved to San Francisco with the rest of the band to explore the creatively and historically rich music center that is the SF Bay Area . In between rehearsing, writing and recording, Luke and Ginger went to as many Grateful Dead shows and other live concerts as they could reasonably afford. They released their first indie album “Before the Fences” in 1993, which they recorded with their band The Sandstones. In 1995, Ginger and Luke loaded up the van and trailer and moved to Nashville, an industry center that appealed to their sensibilities with its emphasis on American roots music traditions. Luke honed his engineering/production chops in the studio-rich neighborhood of Berry Hill . He’s recorded, produced and mixed over 300 demos and albums for independent Americana, rock, jazz, folk, and country artists.
Luke co-produces live music events, including the Tie Dye Jam at The 5 Spot, a monthly music event featuring collaborations by Americana and jam artists. Luke supports singer/songwriters, folk, bluegrass, jam, and Americana artists playing upright, acoustic, and electric bass. He performs in Nashville with The Tennessee Warblers (bluegrass/Americana), Wily (Folk/Americana), and the Grateful Dead tribute band Tennessee Dead. He also partners and supports his wife, singer/songwriter Ginger Sands in her many creative endeavors. He shares his home with his wife, two cats, and his GOAT English Cream retriever named Odie, who is a very good boy whose photos are featured prominently on this website.
